Being different from the norm has always carried terrible consequences. This is particularly true for those in the LGBT community. Discriminated against simply for expressing their gender identity, or for establishing relationships that society deems inappropriate, it is not uncommon for them to suffer abuse throughout their lives, or to even be killed for something that cannot be chosen. This 28th, we want to tell their stories.
The LGBT is one of the most persecuted groups in history. In our current society, the strong fight for LGBT rights, often allied with other social movements such as racial equality, has greatly improved the quality of life of its members. However, there is more work that needs to be done. In dozens of states, being queer is still punishable by harsh prison sentences or the death penalty. Even worse, the rise of extremist ideologies threatens past accomplishments.
One of the most targeted subgroups today is transgender people. Several countries in both Europe and America are implementing laws that reduce their freedom and encourage violence against them. Because of this situation, we from Libros de Malas compañías, on this International LGBT Pride Day, we bring you Vidas TRANSgresoras, a work that invites reflection and tells their stories.
The book is a compilation of several short biographies of individuals who, in one way or another, rebelled against the gender identity that was imposed on them at birth and against the social expectations it entailed. It will be presented at COGAM, calle de la puebla 9, Madrid, together with its authors. Accompanied by beautiful illustrations, it will hopefully fill you with courage and hope this June 28th.
