Too white for blacks ant too black for whites. This is the dilemma many albino folks find themselves in in Africa. This 13th of June, we remember their stories and amplify their voices.
Albinism is a genetic disorder characterized by low to no melanin in the eyes, skin or hair. The condition tends to also carry with it several other health problems: vision troubles or even blindness, extreme sensitivity to light, higher predisposition to burns and skin cancer, amongst others. The latter usually reduces the life expectancy of the African population wit albinism to that of 30 years. Nevertheless, perhaps one of its most hurtful sides is the social stigma and discrimination they frequently receive. In the aforementioned continent is where a lot of the albino population is found, who are usually victims of abandonment, harassment and even murder. A worryingly high number occur as a result of “albino hunts”, as many believe they possess supernatural properties. Their body parts are sold as talismans or used in potions with supposed healing properties.
It is because of the vulnerable situation of the albino population that the United Nations Organization celebrated for the first time on June 13 of 2015 International Albinism Awareness Day. Here from the publisher of Libros de Malas Compañías we also want to play our part in aiding and that’s why we bring you our next release, Cinco conejos y otros animales.
The book consists of several small stories told by different albino individuals, accompanied by charming kids’ illustrations. The benefits contribute to the Centro de Día de las Hermanas Mercedarias en T3 (Matola). Moreover, with each copy sold, another shall be donated in Portuguese to schools where African children attend.
From the 1st to the 15th of June, our publishing house will travel with a group of volunteers to Maputo, Mozambique to present the book and collaborate with the afore-mentioned project. We hope that our efforts will have a positive impact on this wonderful community.
